Art is Deadly in VELVET BUZZSAW [Trailer]

By Marina Antunes [01.10.19]

All you really need to know about Velvet Buzzsaw is that it comes from Nightcrawler writer/director Dan Gilroy and reunites Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo though this time, they're moving on from the bloody business of 24 hours news to the cut-throat business of fine art.

Gyllenhaal plays Morf Vandewalt, an art collector always looking for the next star when Josephina (Zawe Ashton) appears out of apparently no-where with a collection of works that has the entire art community abuzz. The problem is that Josephina is a fake, having stolen the paintings from the real artist who is dead. The thing is, this isn't even the real drama of Gilroy's new nightmare.

Velvet Buzzsaw also stars Toni Collette, John Malkovich, Billy Magnussen, Natalia Dyer and Daveed Diggs.

Though Gilroy's sophomore effort Roman J. Israel, Esq. left a lot to be desired, Velvet Buzzsaw looks to be far more in line with his debut feature and even pushing the envelope further with a supernatural twist. Or maybe it's just the crazy in people's head talking. Either way, this looks incredible.

Velvet Buzzsaw will have its world premiere at Sundance on January 27 but don't despair, Netflix subscribers will have a chance to catch up with it when it debuts on the streaming service on February 1. I've cleared my schedule for that night.
