By Marina Antunes [09.25.19]

The 38th annual Vancouver International Film Festival, which kicks off tomorrow, September 26 and runs to October 11, is one of the largest film festivals in North America comprising of everything from film screenings to masterclasses and with 300+ events, there's a little something for everyone.

This year's event includes a live recording of the hit podcast Song Exploder featuring Public Enemy's Chuck D talking delving deep into the theme song of Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing, Claudio Simonetti's Goblin performing the live score of Deep Red, to a keynote presentation from composer Cliff Martinez who, among other things, will discuss his creative partnerships with Steven Soderbergh and Nicolas Winding Refn.

In additional to a slew of other special presentations, the festival also includes a huge selection of films, from festival favourites like The Lighthouse and Portrait of a Lady on Fire to more mainstream fare like Ford v. Ferrari and Marriage Story.

The festival's focus on Canadian cinema is ever-present in very strong "True North" and "Sea to Sky" streams, including Zacharias Kunuk's (Atanarjuat The Fast Runner) new film Red Snow, Albert Shin's mysterious Clifton Hill, Ramin Fahrenheit's grindhouse offering Killer Queen and Matthew
Rankin's send-up of Canadian identity The Twentieth Century.

The "Altered States" program is always a favourite offering up a slice of genre fare to discerning audiences and this year's line-up is looking mighty solid including a new take on the zombie genre in Blood Quantum from Indigenous filmmaker Jeff Barnaby (Rhymes for Young Ghouls), Veronika Franz's The Lodge, Vincenzo Natali's In the Tall Grass (trailer), and Ant Timpson's Come to Daddy.
