Women Take Control in KNIVES AND SKIN [Trailer]

By Marina Antunes [11.14.19]

Writer/director Jennifer Reeder has been making off-beat movies for some time but her latest feature film Knives and Skin easily takes the cake as one of the most unique hodgepodges of a movie I've seen all year.

The mystery begins when Carolyn Harper disappears. As the small town becomes engulfed in the mystery of what happened to Carolyn, the women in town, both young and old, seem to come to a collective realization that there's more wrong than simply Carolyn's disappearance.

Marika Engelhardt, Audrey Francis, Tim Hopper and Kate Arrington star.

While I can appreciate Reeder's vision of a fresh new take on the coming-of-age story and her revamp of the tired "dead girl" trope, I didn't care for Knives and Skin.

The plot is spread thin over too many characters and some of the creative choices, namely the oddball musical numbers, don't work even though they were some of my favourite moments in the movie.

While I didn't care for Knives and Skin, those with more adventurous taste might find Reeder's new film more interesting than I did. It certainly deserves credit for playing outside the box.

Knives and Skin opens theatrically and will be available on VOD December 6.

Saw this (and 7 others) at Fantastic Fest 2019 in Austin this August. This was the best of the bunch. I liked the minimal dialogue - let actors act!, slight dose of magical realism, and camera work. Deft hand made this.
