Ned Kelly Returns in TRUE HISTORY OF THE KELLY GANG [Trailer]

By Marina Antunes [01.10.20]

Ned Kelly isn't new to movies. The famous, or more accurately infamous, Australian bushranger has appeared numerous times on film, perhaps most notably in 2003 when Heath Ledger, played the outlaw in Gregor Jordan's Ned Kelly.

The latest iteration of Kelly comes via Justin Kurzel, the great Australian director best known for The Snowtown Murders, Macbeth and most recently Assassin's Creed.

Adapted from the award-winning novel of the same name, True History of the Kelly Gang stars George MacKay (currently having a great moment as the star of the excellent 1917), as Kelly and tracks the history of Kelly's rise and eventual fall as one of the most famous of all bushrangers.

Along with MacKay, the film also stars Nicholas Hoult, Charlie Hunnam, and Russell Crowe.

I've not read Peter Carey's novel but from all accounts, this is not your average Ned Kelly story. The trailer for Kurzel's film does suggest that the movie is very much in line with the director's previous projects: visually striking, violent, and powerful.

No word yet on when IFC will release True History of the Kelly Gang but expect to see it this year.
