Emilia Clarke vs The FBI in ABOVE SUSPICION [Trailer]

By Marina Antunes [04.05.21]

Phillip Noyce has long been a purveyor of great thrillers, from Patriot Games and Rabbit-Proof Fence to Salt and while he's kept busy both producing and directing over the last decade, his work has mostly been in TV though that's clearly changing in the coming years as he's currently attached to a number of feature films.

The first of the batch is Above Suspicion, a retelling of the real-life story behind the first FBI agent to be convicted for murder.

The movie stars Emilia Clarke as Susan Smith, a young woman who is trying to escape a life of crime and drugs in a Kentucky coal-mining town. When a newly minted FBI agent named Mark Putnam (Jack Huston) comes rolling into town and wants to recruit Susan as his informant for a high-profile case, she sees this as her opportunity to finally break free and change her circumstances but when her plans fall apart, Susan takes matters into her own hands.

On paper, Above Suspicion sounds exactly like the kind of project that Noyce would make: a thriller featuring a government agency and things gone wrong but the trailer doesn't suggest that this is on the level with Noyce's earlier knockouts. That said, it still looks like a decent, run-of-the-mill crime thriller.

Above Suspicion opens theatrically and will be available to rent on May 14, followed by a Blu-ray and DVD release on May 18.
